Kim Dotcom

The FBI reportedly used private Skype IM conversations that it intercepted as a basis for its case against MegaUpload, but what isn't clear is how exactly the FBI acquired these conversations. Late last week, Stuff.co.nz revealed details of a conversation between MegaUpload co-founder Mathias Ortmann and head programmer Bram van der Kolk in which the pair worried about what founder Kim Dotcom would do if the company found itself in legal trouble. As Van der Kolk reportedly said in a 2007 conversation, "Would he take the last little bit of money and take off? He's good at that."

The question remains as to how the feds got their hands on these conversations — the US Department of Justice told CNET that the evidence was obtained through...

A Farewell to CHUCK: The Little Spy Series that Could

A Farewell to CHUCK: The Little Spy Series that Could
Published on the TV addict | shared via feedly

Just like in the children’s tale of the “little engine that could,” CHUCK was a television show that kept on chugging away against all odds and carved out a place in television history by running five seasons on the sheer will-power of its fans.  Millions of Subway sandwiches later, the fans are still passionately devoted to their show.  Having coined the phrases: Nerd Herd, Buy More and Captain Awesome, as well as creating a whole new dialect comprised of “the Intersect”, “flashes” and “Jeffster” and redefining what it means when a TV show is “on the bubble,” CHUCK is now legendary.  It not only created a universally-accepted and widely used lexicon, CHUCK also introduced characters which fans fell in love with from around the globe.  As the cast will soon discover, fans are not quick to forget their beloved characters and the names: Chuck, Sarah, Casey, Morgan, Ellie, Awesome, Big Mike, Jeff, Lester, and General Beckman are sure to follow the actors throughout the rest of their careers.  It is thus with fondness, warm hearts and more memories than we can count, that CHUCK celebrates its 2-hour series finale.  Perhaps one day, fans across the world will ask each other, “Where were you when CHUCK ended?”  Perhaps this ending is not as momentous as other world events, but for fans who have faithfully followed the series for the past 5 years, the end will be both heartbreaking and cheer-worthy — and, as any fan knows, the end is just the beginning.  CHUCK’s fans share a passion and a collective love of life that cannot be suppressed.  With the availability of DVD’s, fan sites and all the friendship that have blossomed from a common interest in the show, CHUCK is about to be immortalized — as it should be!

For a show that started off about a young computer technician who had the misfortune of receiving an email from an old college friend that visually embedded a complex CIA database into his brain, CHUCK became something much, much more.  It was not just about Chuck Bartowski and his desire to get rid of the Intersect.  It became about the lives that became so tightly intertwined that each character felt like a very special member of Chuck’s immediate family, which in a way, they were.  CHUCK also became our family.  It introduced our hapless hero who was just waiting for life to knock him upside the head and show him what an extraordinary life was within his grasp.  It also introduced two super-heroic government agents, who not only had his back when things got insanely dangerous (which it did frequently), but who also mentored him and came to care for him as if he were one of their own.  And along the way Sarah fell in love with Chuck.  We all knew from that first episode when it ended with Sarah and Chuck sitting on the beach that fate had brought them together for a reason.  Watching them fall in love was just the icing on the cake. Sarah and Chuck’s love story captured our heart and we fell blissfully in love with them.

We also fell in love with Col. John Casey, who’s rough-and-tough attitude concealed a warm and shiny heart of gold.  We were amused and worried that Morgan would one day figure out that his best friend was a secret spy, only to wonder why he wasn’t brought in on the secret sooner once he did find out.  The hilarious shenanigans of the Buy More crew also had us in stitches week-after-week, as Big Mike, Lester and Jeff came up with more and more outrageous ways to boggle-the-mind with their boundless energy and creativity in making the mundane work environment so entertaining.  Then there were the charming and oh-so-beautiful golden couple of Ellie and Awesome.  They always seemed too good to be true, but they were the bright star that kept Chuck grounded in the real world.  Life is not all about tracking villains, cheating death and disrupting massive conspiracies — life is about the small moments that tie our lives together and make us grateful to be a part of each other’s lives.  Chuck may have had dreams of one day having amazing adventures and being the most sought-after man on the planet, but once that dream came true, he began to see the importance of appreciating what you have and holding onto it with both hands.  What Ellie and Awesome had was their love for each other, their love for their families and their desire to give something back.  Chuck learned a lot from all of these incredible people in his life.  He learned to love, to appreciate and to give back.

That is not to say that the moment he could be free of the Intersect that Chuck gave up his life of high-octane adventure; instead he had learned that even without the Intersect he could still do a whole lot of good in the world.  He could be a superhero all on his own.  A little ingenuity, training, bravery and an unflinching willingness to step-up and just-do-it, is all that it takes.  Chuck had been both blessed and cursed by the Intersect, but the one thing it did do for him, that he will always be grateful for, was nudging him onto his destined path.  The Buy More was not the dead-end job he feared he would be stuck in for the rest of his life, it was the launching point for the rest of his life.  It is a lesson we could learn from — and one which we appreciated as well.  It is said that the “meek shall inherit the Earth,” and we saw that the “geeks shall inherit the Earth.”  You can’t keep a good geek down!

CHUCK’s 5th and finale season is about to come to a close, but before it does, a few more surprises are to be revealed and one more big-bad villain to be vanquished.  Last week’s episode showed Sarah Walker having her memories ripped away to such a degree that she no longer even recognized Chuck.  The diabolical Quinn had use the Intersect to strip Sarah’s memories, leaving her a shell of her former self.  Unable to remember the past 5 years, Sarah is now on a mission to kill Chuck.  Surely, the show will not end on such a bitter-sweet note and there will be a miracle that restores Sarah’s memories.  But even if it doesn’t, we know in our hearts that given the chance, Chuck will find a way to make her fall in love with him all over again; and if that were to come to pass, we could only wish we could be there for every delicious moment of that new romance.

But like all wonderful journeys, this one must end too.  CHUCK introduced us to a world that delighted and entertained us for 5 years.  We remain deliriously happy to have had those years.  We fought for them, stood by the show faithfully, and ate many, many, many Subway sandwiches.  It is now time to say goodbye.  Goodbye from all of us who laughed and cried, who roared and cheered, and those of us who will miss you more than we can say.  Goodbyes are hard enough, but we will remember to celebrate all the magnificent memories.  Long live CHUCK in our hearts — you made our dreams come true!

Let’s raise a glass and celbrate the tremendous achievement of Josh Schwartz, Chris Fedak, Zach Levi, Yvonne Strahovski, Adam Baldwin, Josh Gomez, Ryan McPartlin, Sarah Lancaster, Mark Christopher Lawrence, Vic Sahay, Scott Krinsky, and everyone else who brought this extraordinary series to life, by toasting them during CHUCK’s fifth and final season 2-hour finale as it airs Friday, January 27th at 8PM on NBC.

Outdoor ice skating in Toronto

Outdoor ice skating in Toronto
Published on blogTO | shared via feedly

Outdoor Ice Skating TorontoOutdoor ice skating in Toronto is one of those activities that makes urban-dwelling seem a little less metropolitan. That is, unless you opt for the often-overcrowded rink at Nathan Phillips Square or another overly saturated outdoor spot. For the most part, though, these rinks seem to connect us a little better bit nature; be it through a lakeside view, a nature-immersed trail, or the windburn we inevitably get from spending too much time outside. While Toronto's natural ice rinks offer the best back-to-nature experience, they are, of course, weather contingent. So when the winter is a mild one like we're having this year, it might be better to check out some of outdoor ice skating rinks, open throughout winter in Toronto.

Sherbourne Common
This rink offers a simply stunning view of the city, as well a rink guard (occasionally) with whom you can enjoy the scene. While official skating hours are from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., the rink is not fenced in, and thus, technically accessible at all hours. No rentals or changerooms—just washrooms.

Lake Devo
Ryerson students know it as the sometimes-functioning fountain and pond where Tim Hortons cups float astray in the summertime. Come winter, however, the pond is frozen over and the public can come skate from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Occasionally, you'll come across members of the Ryerson figure skating team practicing their axels, and members of Ryerson's freshman community practicing frozen funneling.

Colonel Sam Smith Park
Colonel Sam Smith Park is the only place in Toronto with an official ice skating trail. Though not great for shinny (at around 4.5m wide) the 250m trail has a bit of a respite feel to it (as it should, being in Etobicoke), with a washroom and changing area nearby.

Toronto SkatingChristie Pitts
Vintage swimming trunks are swapped salvage leather ice skates in the wintertime when the crowd shifts from the pool to Christie Pitts' outdoor rink. The rink has designated free skate times, as well as a shinny schedule for kids, youths, adults, avoiding that annoying puck/skate clash. Christie Pitts also has a pretty decent change area (with skate-friendly rubber floors).

Brick Works Ice Trail
While not an official City trail, the Brick Works' free ice trail is not one to overlook. Under old industrial rafters, the Brick Works trail is open weekends 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Thursday evenings from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Skate rentals are available for $5 (or PWYC) and good food, of course, is available nearby at the farmers' market.

Kew Gardens
Like Christie Pitts, Kew Gardens' outdoor rink has designated times for free skate and shinny hockey. Though small, the change area actually has lockers for public use, meaning you don't have to worry about your boots sitting lonely by the side of the rink. Kew Gardens is one of the longest-open City rinks, available for use until March 11.

Trinity Bellwoods
Not exactly the place for a quiet, leisurely skate, but Trinity Bellwoods' rink does offer plenty of room for laps or a game of shinny. The fenced-in rink is one Toronto's few outdoor rinks that has designated shinny times for women's hockey, scheduled here this winter on Monday evenings. No rentals, but there is a nearby changing area.

High Park
High Park has two outdoor rink pads and its own zamboni onsite for regular maintenance. The rink is open as early at 9 a.m. on some days, and closed as late at 9:45 p.m., depending on whether free skate or shinny is on the roster. No rentals here either, though there is a changeroom for lacing up.

ShinnyDufferin Grove
Dufferin Grove is another spot for women's shinny and also one with two full-sized pads. This rinks is one of the best in Toronto in terms of amenities, with a $2 skate-lending program, a kitchen with fresh snacks, lockers, changerooms, organic coffee and hot chocolate, and (best of all) occasional live music.

Habourfront
Harbourfront skating is especially jolly during the holidays when it's drenched with music and cheer, though skating at the lakeside rink continues through the rest of the winter. Pleasure skating is free from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. (11 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays) with rentals available onsite and plenty of hot drinks and snacks. DJ skate night is held every Saturday night, testing our collective ability to grind while on blades.

Wallace Emerson
Wallace Emerson's double-pad rink is available for shinny and pleasure skates. One pad is left unfenced for the season, meaning skaters can take to the ice after the designated 9 p.m. or 10 p.m. close. The change area has skates and helmets to lend out for a nominal cost, as well as a snack bar and some books and games.

College Park
Right in the middle of all the action and unfenced — not great from nearby condo-dwellers, but idea for those keen on midnight skates. The rink at College Park is designated for pleasure skating only (though occasionally the young and restless will tote along a puck), and perhaps for that reason, often seems to be in pretty good condition. Changerooms and lockers onsite, though no rentals.

Note: This list was originally compiled in 2010, but was in need of an update due to new rink opening since then. We've purposely kept most of the archived comments here because we believe they (mostly) add value to this topic. If you don't want to have to wade through all of them, simply hit the "sort by newest first" link at the top of the thread.

Research In Motion’s Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsillie have bowed to investor pressure and resigned as co-CEOs and co-chairmen, handing the top job to an insider with four years at the struggling BlackBerry maker.

Thorsten Heins, a former Siemens executive who has risen steadily through RIM’s upper management ranks since joining the Canadian company in late 2007, took over as CEO yesterday.

The shift ends the two-decade partnership of Lazaridis and Balsillie atop a once-pioneering company that now struggles against Apple and Google.

Tablet Users Spend More Money Online Than Smartphone, Laptop, and Even Desktop Users

Tablet Users Spend More Money Online Than Smartphone, Laptop, and Even Desktop Users
Published on Techvibes Toronto Blog | shared via feedly

Tablet owners are big spenders.

In a study that all retailers should read, Adobe Systems has found that tablet users spend more money per purchase than those conducting ecommerce on smartphones, laptops, and even desktops. Adobe Digital Marketing Insights analyzed 16 billion anonymous visits to 150 different retail websites to discover that tablet users spend 54% more per purchase than smartphone users and 21% more than desktop and laptop users.

“Adobe has long championed the need for retailers to optimize their sites for mobile visitors, and the results of this study indicate that tablet devices have become an absolutely critical new sales channel that marketers must address head-on,” said Brad Rencher, senior vice president and general manager of Adobe Digital Marketing Business, in a release. “This study shows the importance of optimizing your 2012 e-tail strategy for tablet visitors to avoid the risk of underserving a highly-profitable, fast-growing customer segment.”

Not only do tablet users spend more per purchase, but they're also three times as likely to actually buy stuff than smartphone users visiting the same sites. This suggests that mobile optimization must not ignore specific tablet optimization, particularly for ecommerce websites.

The Walking Dead
A while back there was a blind item about an actor who got really upset about Frank Darabont's firing from "Walking Dead"? That would appear to be American "Being Human" star Sam Witwer who had a cameo as the zombie in the tank in the pilot episode.

Witwer says that Darabont wanted to tell a "prequel story about how Atlanta fell…'Black Hawk Down', but with zombies" and with some of the regular cast briefly cameoing.

Witwer's non-turned character was to be the lead character in it with the episode ending with a reprise of the tank scene from the pilot. With Darabont out, it's not happening now and he seems understandably upset about it. [Source: io9]

FOX
Fox entertainment president Kevin Reilly appeared at the Television Critics Association winter press tour the other day and confirmed a few bits of news.

The network still hasn't made final decisions on the fates of "House", "Fringe" or "Terra Nova" but the outlook for all three isn't good. The creators of "Bones" however feel "very confident" they will be given the go-ahead for an eighth season.

"Glee" will NOT be getting a spin-off but they've managed an "interesting idea" that will allow graduating students to appear. Lea Michele is confirmed to be returning, however Chris Colfer isn't yet set. [Source: TV Fanatic]

NBC
NBC's Bob Greenblatt has assured the press that "Community" and "Law and Order: SVU" will be coming back, but dates for their return haven't been set yet. [Source: The Associated Press]

MERLIN Season 4 Scoop: Katie McGrath Spills Morgana’s Secrets

MERLIN Season 4 Scoop: Katie McGrath Spills Morgana’s Secrets
Published on the TV addict | shared via feedly

As the line between love and hate has now been obliterated in Morgana’s blood-thirty quest to rule Camelot, all that really stands between her and the throne is the wizard Merlin.  With her arch-nemesis lurking in the shadows awaiting her next move, and as the 4th season opens, Morgana moves swiftly to reclaim the throne after losing it so abruptly at the end of the 3rd season.  Taking a few minutes to talk exclusively about what is going on with the nastiest sorceress in Arthurian history, Katie McGrath gleefully shared what she loves most about Morgana and what is going on in Morgana’s head as she scrambles to secure her destiny.

At the end of last season, we last saw Morgana as she was overthrown as the usurper of the throne.  Does she now realize that she’ll never be accepted as ruler of Camelot, or does she want to continue to pursue the throne and the crown by any means necessary this next season?
KATIE:  Morgana is not a girl who is ever, ever, ever going to give up. She is committed to what she has to do.  She believes that it is her right and her destiny to rule Camelot.  As Uther’s eldest child, she is not about to let it go — particularly as she doesn’t believe Arthur is fit to be king anyway.

Determined young woman!  What would be the one overriding emotion that compels her throughout this next season?
KATIE:  Revenge.  She is committed.  She is blinkered in everything she does.  She believes in everything she does and she is determine to get there.  She is not like in other seasons when she was more compassionate, more understanding, and had more emotions for other people.  Right now, she is pure anger and pure hatred.  She is hurt and she wants revenge for people like her, who were destroyed and persecuted.

Do you think she is allowing any room for redemption?
KATIE:  I think ultimately Morgana is going to have to answer for everything she has done.  I think, it may not happen by the end of Season 4.  It will happen at the end of the story, for every story needs a villain — not a victim.  You need somebody who is the foil to Merlin — the darkness to his light — you need the other side of the coin.  That’s what makes people heroes — how they react to the villain.  So you don’t necessarily want to see her being good.  You want to see the battle go on longer — it’s what makes the series interesting and dynamic.

Will there be a change in the relationship between Morgana and Morgause this next season?  Will they be stronger as sisters or will jealousies arise?
KATIE:  I think they will be stronger than ever.  I think Morgana will never let go, no matter what happens between the two of them.

So they are going to be the evil duo?
KATIE:  Well, never say never.  That may be, but you’ll have to tune in and watch.

There is going to be a new character introduced, Agravaine, who is the uncle of Arthur.  Can you talk a bit about his role and what Morgana may be scheming?
KATIE:  Agravaine, as we discover early on, is Arthur’s uncle on his maternal side.  Without giving too much away, he’s not everything as he seems.  He has a role to play that ends up having quite a lot to do with Morgana — and if you imagine what role Morgana has played, that might be a hint at what role Agravaine might play.

Sounds intriguing!  So as Morgana is rising more into her power is she stepping away from the physical fight scenes, or will she be just as bad-ass as she was last season?
KATIE:  The thing about her is she doesn’t need a sword anymore.  With the mere flick of her wrist, the mere crook of her finger, she can send people flying.  So why would she wield a sword when she doesn’t have to?

Powerful woman.  That must be a lot of fun to portray.
KATIE:  You may see Morgana with a sword, and you may see Guinevere with a sword, and you may see a confrontation between them with swords.  So there!

Are we going to be seeing a change in the Gwen and Morgana relationship, from mentor-mentee and friends to something more antagonistic?
KATIE:  Absolutely!  There is no way with what Morgana has done that their relationship can be saved.  You have to remember that Morgana believes she should be queen, so where does that leave Guinevere?  Morgana can see the future and she knows what’s going to happen and what does that mean?  They can’t.  It’s heartbreaking, but upcoming there was some good stuff to film actually.

Do you think Morgana is actually willing to kill these people that she once loved, or is she going to draw a line and simply throw them out of power?
KATIE:  There is no line for Morgana.  She has moved so far past the line, there is no line.

Do you feel like she’s crossed the line into lunacy, kind of like Uther, or does she still have her wits about her?
KATIE:  I think she’s very controlled.  I just think she’s blinkered.  She sees the end, but she doesn’t see the damage she is wreaking on the way.  Ironically, I think she is more like Uther than Arthur is.  She is more his daughter than Arthur is like him.  But she’s not mad.  She has not hit lunacy.  She’s just so completely committed.  She’s completely obsessed with what she has to do that she cannot see any other way.

She does resemble Uther quite a bit in that way, which is fabulous. I know that you finished the fourth season and are starting work on the fifth season.  So what, for you as an actress, is the most challenging and rewarding thing to do right now?
KATIE:  What’s amazing about Morgana is trying to trying to find the balance between not making her too arch and not making her sympathetic, yet playing her so that people can understand what she is trying to do.  I don’t think people should have to agree with how she is, but I hope that they can kind of see the three years that it has taken to get her where she is and understand why she is doing it without necessarily agreeing with it. So that’s been the challenge for me.

Is that a fun thing for you to do, to try to portray her as more sympathetic, or do you just love being as bad as possible in the character?
KATIE:  I love being as bad as possible!  You’ve got to love a bad girl.  Look “Gone With the Wind,” Scarlett O’Hara — total bad girl, but you love her.

So you’re thinking, “I’m going to be the baddest bad-ass woman on television right now — and it’s going to be the most epic thing ever!”
KATIE:  Damn right!  That’s what I’m thinking. [Laughter]

For the fans, maybe you could comment on what it is like to work with so many hot men on the show.  I mean, now with the Knights of the Round Table, it is kind of incredible.
KATIE:  You know what’s amazing?  It’s disappointing, but I’ve been working with them so long, I don’t see it.  They’re like my brothers.  You see them in the morning, you see them being goofy — they just become like your brothers, you’ve spent so much time with them.  I don’t want to spoil the mystique for anybody, but after all this time, it’s hard to see them as anything else.  [Laughter]

And none of these hot, beautiful men are going to be turning Morgana’s eyes?
KATIE:  I think she’s far too committed to world domination to be thinking about her love-life at this point.  Maybe in time that will change, but for right now, I think it is all about ruling, not about loving for Morgana.

To see what chaos and hell on Earth Morgana has planned for Camelot, be sure to tune in for the 4th season premiere of MERLIN on Friday, January 6th at 10PM on Syfy.
